The Handmade Music School presents an intermediate old time fiddle workshop with Rachel Eddy on Saturday, February 22, 2020 from 1:30 - 3:00 pm. This fiddle workshop will focus primarily on how to help your fiddling sound old-timey and more driving. It will be geared toward learning how to use bow pulses, bowing phrases, and note combinations to give fiddle tunes a shape.

The Handmade Music School presents part three of a live sound workshop series with Joseph Dejarnette of Studio808A/Turn It Down Sound on Monday, November 4, 2019 from 6:00-8:00 pm. This intermediate workshop is designed for folks who already know how to set-up and run a small PA, but are looking to become more familiar with fine tuning a system for the best possible sound using whatever gear and space is available. This workshop takes into consideration running sound that includes electric instruments and drum kits.
The Handmade Music School present an intermediate fiddle workshop, "Merging Traditional Fiddle Styles," with Billy Hurt on Saturday October 12, 2019 from 3:30-5:00pm. Cost is $30. This intermediate workshop will teach participants to use multiple fiddle styles to create their own versions of tunes, while staying within the framework of traditional music. Billy will point out examples of fiddlers that have used the same techniques on old records.

This workshop will focus on a few Round Peak/Galax area tunes, as well as some clawhammer techniques and licks you can add to your playing to give it more character/variety. We will go through tunes phrase by phrase at a moderate pace so as to get in as many tunes as possible. Attendees are expected to be able to learn by ear or by watching, as no tablature or written notation will be provided.

The Handmade Music School presents an intermediate bluegrass mandolin workshop with Jesse Smathers on Sunday, August 11, 2019 from 2:00-3:30 pm. This Beginner/Intermediate workshop will break down components of driving Bluegrass mandolin. Focusing on developing listening skills, we will cover the basics of the rhythm chop, chord structures and substitutions, and lead playing including embellishment on breaks based around the melody. The skills covered in this workshop will prove relevant in any traditional or modern Bluegrass context.
The Handmade Music School presents an Intermediate Round Peak Clawhammer Banjo Workshop with Adam Hurt on Thursday, April 25, 2019 from 5:30-8:00pm. Workshop participants should have a good working knowledge of the basics of the clawhammer style, including drop-thumbing, and be comfortable playing in multiple tunings. All material will be taught by ear in the traditional manner, so the use of recording devices is highly recommended.
The Handmade Music School is offering a series of one-hour afternoon workshops as part of the Floyd County Old Time Music Get-Together on Friday, March 16 and Saturday, March 17, 2018, at the the Floyd EcoVillage in Floyd County, Virginia. Workshops include intermediate and advanced classes in fiddle, banjo, guitar, dance, and singing. We are opening these workshops to the public. Pre-registration is required. Cost is $25 per workshop.
