The Handmade Music School presents Traditional Fingerpicking Banjo Styles with Corbin Hayslett

Corbin Hayslett with Banjo (landscape)

Although most often associated with playing in the clawhammer style, “old-time” banjo is inextricably connected to, and was once dominated by, fingerstyle playing. From the pages of the first published banjo instructional book in 1855 to the televised broadcasts of Hee Haw in the 1970s, old-time fingerstyle banjo playing has been an essential part of the instrument’s history and uses both urban and rural. Join Corbin Hayslett for this two-hour adventure in various styles of traditional fingerstyle banjo playing. Absorb the techniques of musicians like Uncle Dave Macon, Dock Boggs, Charlie Poole, Lee Sexton and many more. Come away from this workshop with more tools in your tool bag to get more out of your instrument!

This workshop is recommended for intermediate to advanced players. Participants are not required to read music/tablature and will not be required to use finger picks.

About Corbin Hayslett

I grew up surrounded by music in rural, central Virginia. Singing in church and with family was elemental to my early years, and thanks to my father I was very familiar with bluegrass and old-time music before I was out of grade school. By the time I was nine I asked Santa Clause to bring me a banjo for Christmas and luckily, he delivered. Appalachian music has been my life’s fascination and has taught me more and taken me farther than I could have ever dreamed. It is my honor to share with you some of what I have picked up from countless kind and patient friends and instructors along the way.

This workshop is subject to cancellation up to 24 hours in advance if the minimum number of participants is not reached. Thank you for your understanding.
