The Handmade Music School presents Old Time Banjo with Allison de Groot: Tunes from Maggie Hammons Parker on Thursday, April 8, 2021 at 3:00 EDT. The workshop will be presented via Crowdcast as part of our Handmade at Home online series. Cost is $1 to $100 (suggested donation of $15).

Workshop Description

We will learn a couple of tunes that Maggie Hammons Parker played on the banjo. I first heard Maggie’s banjo playing on the Field Recorders Collective release, and love her two-finger and clawhammer playing. From Pocahontas County, West Virginia, Maggie was also a singer and storyteller and part of a large musical family. Come and dig into a couple tunes from her repertoire, which we will work on in the clawhammer style.

About the Instructor

Allison de Groot combines love traditional music, technical skill and a creative approach to the banjo forming her own sound – unique and full of personality. Her collaborations with Allison de Groot & Tatiana Hargreaves, Bruce Molsky’s trio Molsky’s Mountain Drifters, The Goodbye Girls and Nic Gareiss provide spaces to explore the role and depth of clawhammer banjo.

Please consider a donation to today’s teaching artist and The Handmade Music School (a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization). Thanks!
