Old Time Mountain Dulcimer: Kentucky Tunes with Sarah Kate Morgan

February 3 @ 11:00 am 12:30 pm

The Handmade Music School presents Old Time Mountain Dulcimer: Kentucky Tunes with Sarah Kate Morgan at the Floyd Country Store on Saturday, February 3rd, 2024 from 11:00-12:30pm. Cost is $25.

The mountain dulcimer is a dynamic and unique addition to any old time jam, as well as a captivating accompaniment to singing traditional songs. In this Intermediate level class, we will build from the basics and further your Appalachian dulcimer skills. We’ll start by honing our strumming skills and developing a strong, consistent, and interesting strumming hand that can add unique rhythmic drive and texture to any old time jam. From there, we’ll learn a few simple old time tunes and some basic chords to accompany them. Repertoire will mostly consist of Eastern Kentucky old time tunes and songs. We’ll also spend some time on how to play in multiple keys and tunings, like DGD, DAC, and using the capo combined with the DAD tuning to easily play in all the common old-time keys. This class is not for brand new players, but rather for students who can already tune their instrument, strum and fret comfortably (slow is okay!), and play a few simple tunes! Sarah Kate primarily plays and teaches in the DAD and DGD tunings and does not use a noter, although noter players are welcome. Sarah Kate also teaches primarily by ear, but will give sheet music and tablature after the class. If students have a dulcimer, capo, bring it to class but Sarah will have a few extra to share.
