The Handmade Music School presents Fiddle and Banjo Duets with Tatiana Hargreaves and Allison de Groot on Thursday, February 11, 2021 at 3:00 EST. The workshop will be presented via Crowdcast as part of our Handmade at Home online series. Cost is $1 to $100 (suggested donation of $15).
This workshop will explore dynamics of the banjo-fiddle duo. We will work on navigating through the sparsity of this configuration, and how to listen, respond, interact, improvise variations, and pick up new tunes on the fly. In the online format, we will learn a tune and then demonstrate on each instrument how we would approach the tune when playing together, giving concrete examples you can explore in your own playing.
About the Instructors
Allison de Groot combines love traditional music, technical skill and a creative approach to the banjo forming her own sound – unique and full of personality. Her collaborations with Allison de Groot & Tatiana Hargreaves, Bruce Molsky’s trio Molsky’s Mountain Drifters, The Goodbye Girls and Nic Gareiss provide spaces to explore the role and depth of clawhammer banjo.
Over the past eight years, Tatiana Hargreaves has been on the forefront of an up and coming generation of old time, bluegrass and new acoustic musicians. Since releasing her first solo album “Started Out To Ramble” in 2009, Tatiana has toured with musicians such as Dave Rawlings, Gillian Welch, Laurie Lewis, Darol Anger, and Bruce Molsky. From placing first at the Clifftop Appalachian Fiddle Contest, to her bluegrass fiddling on Laurie Lewis’ GRAMMY-nominated album The Hazel And Alice Sessions, Hargreaves shows a musical fluency that flows between old time and bluegrass worlds with ease. She currently tours with banjo extraordinaire Allison de Groot and teaches bluegrass fiddle at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
