The Handmade Music School presents The Carter Family: Songs and Techniques with Tyler Hughes at the Floyd Country Store on Saturday, December 2nd, 2023 from 11:00-12:30pm. Cost is $20 and includes a Carter Family CD.

This workshop is beginner-friendly and welcome to all who want to participate or simply listen. The material will cover some lesser-known Carter Family gems and discuss some of the playing techniques used on the guitar and autoharp. Participants are encouraged to bring guitars, autoharps, or any folk instrument to play along with.

Every participant will take home a 1930s recording of The Carter Family from County Sales that includes:

About Tyler Hughes:

Award-winning old-time musician Tyler Hughes has been performing and preserving the musical traditions of Central Appalachia since his teenage years. A multi-instrumentalist and square dance caller, Tyler also works as an educator sharing his knowledge at camps and workshops across the country. Tyler is the Executive Director of the Crooked Road: Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail. Hughes graduated from East Tennessee State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Bluegrass, Old Time, and Country Music Studies. Since graduating college he has toured at home and abroad in Europe. His latest release, “When the Light Shines Again” paints a musical timeline of the history of coal mining in the mountains of Appalachia. Tyler’s banjo tunes and songs have been heard on PBS’ Song of the Mountains, NPR’s Mountain Stage, at Jazz at the Lincoln Center, the Grand Ole Opry, and at the historic Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia.
