Carter Family Song Lab
September 8 @ 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm
The Handmade Music School presents Carter Family Song Lab – a four-week class series on Wednesdays from 6:00-7:30pm from September 8th – 29th. Classes will take place in-person at the Floyd Country Store in Downtown Floyd, VA. Cost is $140.00 for four classes. Scholarships are available.
Come join Mac Traynham, Ash Watkins, and Andrew Small in a serious exploration of old-time songs from the First Family of Country Music – Southwest Virginia’s own Carter Family. We’ll uncover timeless songs by listening to the original recordings and breaking down the arrangements and stylistic techniques that have influenced and inspired so many over the last century. Participants will be directly involved in looking for ways to enjoy singing such songs with more accuracy and confidence considering their range of abilities. Carter-style harmony singing will be a primary focus but we will also compare and experiment with other interesting styles of harmony. Participants are encouraged to submit their favorite Carter Family songs for scrutiny and testing before the group. We will experiment daily with everyone singing as much as possible yielding results which are expected to be F_U_N.
Bring your voices, your instruments, a notebook and recording device, and your favorite Carter Family songs!
There is a minimum number of participants needed for this workshop to run. If that number is not met, this event is subject to cancellation up to 48 hours in advance. Thanks for your understanding.
