Rain Date: May 29th

The Handmade Music School presents Blue Ridge Style with Mac Traynham and Andy Buckman on Saturday, May 22, 2021 from 3:00 – 4:30pm EDT. This workshop will be held outdoors in the backyard of the Floyd Country Store in downtown Floyd, VA following COVID-19 guidelines. Cost is $30.

This intermediate-level group workshop is intended to help old-time fiddlers and clawhammer style banjo players work together better to create an authentic ‘mountain music’ sound. Fiddlers will be shown some basic rhythmic bowing techniques that will enhance the basic beat as we learn a few Blue Ridge style tunes. Banjo players will be given a review of the basics of the clawhammer style. Intermediate and advanced techniques will be shown that create and enhance a tune’s melody without giving up the rhythmic role that is basic to Blue Ridge style old-time banjo music. Both D and A tunes will be explored.

About the Instructors

Mac Traynham is an accomplished fiddler and banjo player as well as a fine guitar player and singer. Influenced by well known and obscure musicians of the past, Mac has developed a hard-driving style of playing which keeps the rhythm going strongly and delights dancers! He teaches at numerous music camps and has won many ribbons from various Fiddler’s Conventions.

Andy Buckman has played clawhammer banjo and sung in church since childhood. He has performed and recorded with Mac and Jenny Traynham, the Reed Island Rounders, and the Wolfe Brothers, and has taught at numerous workshops. His music is rooted in the playing of Wade Ward, Abe Horton, and Harold Hausenfluck. Andy teaches both fretted and fretless banjo in traditional Blue Ridge clawhammer and thumb lead styles.
